The SBU military counterintelligence reportedly thwarted attempts by Russian military intelligence to "get" its agent into the headquarters of the command of the Airborne Assault Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
As a result of a special operation in Kyiv, an accomplice of the Russian secret service was detained who tried to join the Ukrainian paratroopers under the guise of a chaplain. The agent wanted to "enroll" in one of the combat brigades of the Airborne Forces to spy on its locations and movements towards the front line
According to the SBU, the suspect was supposed to establish a trusting relationship with the command of the Ukrainian Air Assault Forces. "In this way, he hoped to expand his 'capabilities' to collect data on weapons, work plans and combat operations of Ukrainian defenders," the SBU said.
The SBU exposed the mole in a timely manner and identified his Russian handlers. The next stage was the detention of the suspect when he was already being interviewed at the headquarters of the Ukrainian paratroopers' command for "enlistment" in the Armed Forces, the special service said.
According to the investigation, "the detainee was the chief specialist of one of the departments of the Kyiv Regional Military Administration".
"The official was remotely recruited by a staff member of the 317th Intelligence Center of the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces (known as Gru). In order to pose as a chaplain, the Kyiv resident made a false "certificate" about allegedly belonging to a parishioner of one of the denominations," the SBU said.
During the detention, the traitor's cell phone with evidence of his correspondence with the Russian game was allegedly "seized".
The offender was served a notice of suspicion under Part 2 Art. 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (high treason committed under martial law). The offender faces life imprisonment.
