The European Union has announced a possible ban on the new viewer reward feature in the TikTok Lite app due to child safety concerns. The feature, which rewards users for watching videos, could be suspended unless the issue of protecting young people as they use new digital opportunities is addressed.
The EU has stated that this feature can cause addiction similar to cigarettes. The Commission requires the company to provide "convincing" evidence that children are protected from potential negative consequences.
This may be the first time that the EU will use its new powers under the Digital Services Act (DSA) to impose sanctions on social media companies.
The Commission has given TikTok until Wednesday to submit its defense arguments, which will be carefully evaluated before a final decision is made.
The Commission has indicated that the rewards feature may be suspended if there is no satisfactory response to concerns about the impact on users' mental health.
